You can output the metadata for these resources in four ways:
- For the screen: This prints the metadata in a format
that is designed to look good on the screen and also when
printed on paper.
- To copy to a file: This is almost the same as the screen
option, except that it does not use tables, so it looks
better when saved to a file. It will also be easier to edit.
Use your browser to save this output as a text file (*.txt).
Then you can open the text file in your favorite word processor.
- In citation format: We recommend this format for citing
archived resources in articles or in your CV.
- To read into a spreadsheet: This option produces the
metadata in fields separated by semi-colons. The value for each
field is enclosed in quotes. You should be able to save this
output to a text file and then load it into a spreadsheet. The
first line is the header with the titles for the fields.
Warning: Do NOT use the browser's Save button to save this output.
It will add line breaks that mess up the spreadsheet.
Follow the steps shown below to transfer the metadata to a
spreadsheet. The example given is for Microsoft Excel, but other
spreadsheet programs should work similarly.
After you choose 'To load into a spreadsheet':
- Choose 'Select All' on the Edit menu of your browser to
select (highlight) all of the text in the window.
- Choose 'Copy' on the Edit menu to copy all of the selected
text to the buffer.
- Open a text editor (Notepad for Windows; TextEdit for Macs)
and choose 'Paste' on the Edit menu to paste the selected
text into the editor.
- Save the file. We'll call this one 'my_metadata.txt'.
- Open the text file in the spreadsheet program (MS Excel in
this example.) You may have to specify that you want to see
files of All Types.
- Excel will start its Text Import Wizard. On the first page,
tell it you have a Delimited file. The default values are fine
for the other fields.
- On the next page, it wants to know how your file is
delimited. Uncheck 'Tab' and check 'Semicolon.' The rest
should be OK.
- On the next page, be sure to set the Column Data Format to
'Text' instead of 'General' or it will not display
dates and durations correctly.
- Click 'Finish' on the last page and you're done.
