| Description | Gujá is a Tupian language spoken by approximately 500 people of recent contact with the surrounding society. The Guajá people call themselves Awá, they are hunters and gatherers and, to a large extent, still monolingual. There are groups that remain uncontacted, living isolated in the forest, but the Guajá that are in permanent contact currently live on four Indian Reserves in the northwest of Maranhão state, Brazil: Caru, Awá, Alto Turiaçu and Arariboia.
